Before your arrival

Well before your arrival in France, you must undertake certain administrative procedures, including the visa application which is a condition for entering France. France-visas is the official website containing all the necessary information to guide researchers in their visa application process and to assist them in each step (preparation of the file, data entry, submission and follow-up of your application).

Upon arrival in France

To stay in France, you must be in possession of a visa depending on your personal situation and the length of your stay. The long-stay visa or VLS allows you to enter France for a stay of more than 3 months. As a reminder, there are two types of long-stay visas:

  • The VLS-TS which must be validated online on the ANEF website
  • The VLS whose holder must apply for a residence permit within 2 months at the prefecture or sub-prefecture of their place of residence.

The VLS is divided into two sub-categories :

Regardless of the type of VLS, the holder must apply for a residence permit within two months of entering France.

The maximum period of validity of the residence permit is 5 years. In the case of a permanent residence permit, the duration of the permit is 10 years.

The application to renew your residence permit must be made three months before it expires by making an appointment with the prefectural services of your place of residence.
